Casa degli Artale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Casa degli Artale (House of the Artale family) is a residential building in the historic center of Palermo .

history

The date of construction of the building is unclear as it has been modified several times over the centuries. Local traditions connect the building with the Basilian monastery of Santissimo Salvatore founded by the Norman rulers . The medieval facade details that are still recognizable are more reminiscent of the 14th century Chiaramont style .

In the 15th century, the house belonged to the Artale family, from whom it takes its current name. At that time the house is said to have served as a hospice.

During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged, including by the rubble of the Palazzo Papè-Valdina on the other side of the street, which was hurled against the facade of the Casa degli Artale in a bombing raid in 1943.

facade

The main facade on Via del Protonotaro still shows some decorative elements from the Middle Ages . The best-preserved detail is a walled-up four-part window in the form of two biforias placed one above the other, above which a rose window and an ogival arcade are arranged. The facade shows other larger and smaller blind arches, all of which are formed from a broad band with geometric stone inlays.

The raised part of the building to the right of the main facade is probably a former defense tower. It is believed that such a defense tower was originally located on the left side of the house.
