The atrium in the Casa dell'Ara massima, with a picture of Narcissus

The Casa dell'Ara massima (VI 16.15) (German house with (the picture) the Ara Maxima ), also Casa di Narciso (German house of Narcissus ), is the modern name of a small atrium house in Pompeii , which by its first-class Painting stands out.

The house is entered from Via del Vesuvio. To the left and right of the entrance there are two shops (or cubicula ) and from there you get directly into the small atrium , around which practically all rooms of the house are grouped. In the place of the tablinum there is only a niche in which there is a picture of Narcissus . The triclinium to the left of the atrium shows a fourth style wall painting with Selene and Endymion and on the opposite wall Ariadne , who is discovered by a bacchante . The walls are structured by fields and architectural views.

The next room has a simpler yellow decoration with various central pictures, including the picture of Hercules at the Ara Maxima in Rome , which gives the house its name . The fine paintings in this house stand in striking contrast to the smallness of the house. Despite a number of finds in the house, nothing is known about the owner or his profession.
