The Casamentos de Santo António (Eng .: Weddings to St. Anthony ) are a traditional wedding celebration in the Portuguese capital Lisbon . They take place annually on June 12th and form one of the highlights of the festivities in honor of the city saint, Santo António .

history

The Casamentos go back to an initiative of the daily Diário Popular . Between 1957 and 1974, she organized the Noivas de Santo António , a joint wedding celebration for several couples, on Anthony's Day every year . After the Carnation Revolution , this tradition came to a standstill.

In 1997 the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon took up the idea again. Since then, 16 couples have been married every year, either the bride or the groom have to live in Lisbon. The celebration will take place in Lisbon Cathedral and will be broadcast live on the RTP television program .

In addition to the families of the newlyweds, couples who had married 50 years earlier as part of the Noivas de Santo António are also invited .
