Cassillis Castle

Cassillis Castle , also Cassillis House , is a manor house near the Scottish town of Maybole in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The oldest fragments of the building probably date from the 14th, possibly also from the 15th century. Extensions were added in the course of the 17th century and the entire structure was redesigned. Cassillis Castle was for centuries the seat of the Clan Kennedy originating Earl of Cassilis (later known as Marquess of Ailsa ). Today the mansion is owned by Australian Kate Armstrong , who made a fortune as a partner in an online insurance portal. In 2013, the restoration of Cassillis Castle was portrayed in the UK television series Restoration Home . Allegedly, in the course of the recordings, evidence of an involvement of the previous owner Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis in the murder of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley , husband of Queen Mary of Scots , was discovered.

description

The manor house is isolated on extensive grounds on the south bank of the Doon between the villages of Maybole and Dalrymple . Originally it was a keep with a rectangular floor plan. The protruding stair tower on the southeast side dates from the 17th century. The entrance area is also located here. In the Victorian era , a Scots Baronial Style annex was added on the southeast side . Cassillis Castle has a total of 112 rooms. Various outbuildings date from between 1879 and 1907.
