Castelbajac (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Castelbajac is an ancient noble family from the former province of Bigorre , whose boundaries essentially coincide with today's Hautes-Pyrénées . Mentioned in a document since 1080, the family has owned two of the twelve baronies of this province since the 11th century and is their oldest family.

In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, it had a crusader of the Third Crusade (Bernard de Castelbajac, whose coat of arms can be seen in the Salle des Croisades in Versailles), four captains of the province of Bigorre, a captain of Perigord and a captain of Peschiera, a bishop of Pamiers as well as a number of important generals, chamberlains and advisers in the service of the crown of Navarre (to which Bigorre belonged until the reign of Henry the Fourth).

They owned the following lordships, among others: Castelbajac, Montastruc, Goudon, Séméac, Bernet, Lubret, Lagarde, Barbazan, Hèches, Orieux, Loubersan, Vic-Bigorre, Astugues, Hèches, Campistrous, Sarraganchies, Mont-d'Oleron, Castillon , Bouilh, Tajan, Casenove, Mingot, Lacassagne, Casteljaloux, Forgues, Cabanac, Fayan, Mansan etc.

The chiefs of the two still existing lines, which come from the main line, which died out in 1550 in the 13th and 14th centuries, bear the title of Marquis, while other members bear the title of Comte, Viscount or Baron.

Members of this family married numerous large houses, including Foix-Rabat, Montlezun, Pardaillan-Gondrin , Lavedan, Montesquiou, Astarac, Comminges, Durfort-Civrac, Béon, Mun, La Tour du Pin-Gouvernet, La Rochefoucauld, Mac- Mahon, La Forest-Divonne, Colonna di Stiglione, Oudinot de Reggio.
