The Castello Spinola , also Castello di Campo Ligure , is an ancient castle in the Italian region of Liguria . It is located on a hill in the middle of the village of Campo Ligure , which belongs to the metropolitan city of Genoa , in the valley of the Stura river, which flows from the Ligurian mountains towards the Mediterranean. The castle probably served to control the valley, which is an important access valley from Piedmont to the Ligurian coast.
history
Since the castle was built in several phases over decades, exact dating of the year of construction is difficult or even impossible. The period of origin is sometimes given as the Roman Empire or the 9th century, whereas the late Middle Ages are considered the most likely time of origin. The hexagonal castle wall is dated to the 12th to 13th centuries; the residential tower , however, appears to be of a younger age and stands on the site of a tower built in the Middle Ages.
