Castle Tump , also known as the Trecastle Motte , is a castle stables in Powys , Wales. Protected as a Scheduled Monument , the facility is located on the eastern outskirts of the village of Trecastle . It was created at the beginning of the 11th century.

history

In the course of the Norman conquest of Brycheiniog , Bernard de Neufmarché erected a moth around 1093 . Between 1121 and 1136 the castle was destroyed again in a Welsh raid and then abandoned. It is possible that Walter de Clifford used the site for a new fortification in the 1150s , but since there are no traces of masonry, the castle was no longer of any importance and fell into disrepair.

investment

The well-preserved, steep castle hill has a floor area of 50 meters × 38 meters at the base and a flat, 24 meters × 16 meters large plateau at the summit. The outer bailey was southwest of the castle hill and was 56 meters by 40 meters. Both the hill and the outer bailey were surrounded by a moat .

The oval, tree-covered moth dominates the eastern outskirts of Trecastle, the former area of the outer bailey is crossed by a road.

Name of the village

The village is named after the old moth, whose original name was "una villa nostra de Lliwel". Today, however, Llywel is the name of the neighboring village, the parish and the ward . The local name "Trecastle" originated in the late Middle Ages and means "the city of the castle".
