Castlehill Tower

Castle Hill Tower , and Castle Hill of Manor , is the ruin of a residential tower with a rectangular plan from the late 15th century in the town of Manor , about 1.5 km from the village of Kirkton Manor in the Scottish administration unit Scottish Borders .

history

The Lowis family from Manor had Castlehill Tower built, first mentioned in 1555. In 1637 the castle was sold to Alexander Veitch , who in 1672 resold it to George Baillie of Jerviswood . From 1703 to 1729 it belonged to William Douglas , 1st Earl of March . William Tweedle of Quarter appears to have owned it in 1838, but he gave it up two years later.

architecture

Castlehill Tower, which stands on the western end of a rocky hill on the west bank of Manor Water , is believed to have consisted of three full floors and an attic, but today only parts of the ground floor and first floor remain. The floor space is 11.41 m × 9.02 m. The walls of the first floor are 2 meters thick. The entrance leading to a small lobby was in the east wall. In the lobby there is a staircase to the knight's hall on the 1st floor. These stairs also lead to a passage to the hall with vaulted ceiling and also to a staircase in the north-west corner of the tower. On the ground floor there are traces of toilet channels coming from the toilet core on the upper floors.

There is a trench an average of 3.3 meters wide at the bottom on the south, west and north-west sides of the building. On the Contrescarpe there is a wall that may have continued to the north, where a road now runs, as well as along the steep east side. The slopes of the hill were probably sloped. There are traces of a stone wall on the north and east sides. The entire top of the hill was probably fenced.

The securing work on the tower property in 1889 was not entirely successful.

The castle protected a ford across Manor Water.

Historic Scotland has listed Castlehill Tower as a Category B Historic Building.
