history

Restored stables

In the 13th century the Stuarts of Castlemilk in Dumfriesshire acquired the lands of Cassilton in Carmunnock . In the 16th century they renamed the property "Castlemilk". In 1937 the Glasgow Corporation bought the site to build a settlement, but the outbreak of World War II delayed construction. The Castlemilk settlement was established in the 1950s. The mansion was bought by the Glasgow Corporation in 1939 and housed evacuees from the city there until the end of the war. From 1948 until it was closed in January 1969 due to high maintenance costs, Castlemilk House served as a children's home. In December of the same year the country house was demolished.
