As Castro de la Mesa de Miranda called Celtic height fortress is located on the territory of the municipality Chamartín about 28 km northwest of the city of Ávila in the Spanish region of Castilla-Leon .

history

From the middle of the 1st millennium BC the site belonged to To the settlement area of ​​the Celtic tribal group of the Vettonen . It fell into disrepair at the latest after the Roman conquest of Spain and was only rediscovered and partially excavated in the 1930s.

Excavation site

The area of ​​the excavation site covers around 30 hectares, whereas the original zone only took up around 11 hectares. However, this was enlarged twice and surrounded by a 2.8 km long and 5 m thick wall. It can be assumed that craftsmen ( blacksmiths and potters ) also lived and worked in the complex. The existence of a cult center has not yet been established.

necropolis

To the south of the Castro is a cemetery with 2,230 graves that have so far been identified. Funerary objects such as weapons and jewelry have been found in some ; however, most were empty. Some tombs were covered by small stone mounds ( tumuli ) .
