Catenet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catenet is a term from the early days of the Internet that describes a packet-switched network as an amalgamation of smaller networks. The Internet in its current form is the largest catenet in existence to date.

A more precise definition can be seen in Vinton Cerfs read 1978 by and large, as a technical report "The Catenet Model for Internetworking" merger of cooperating networks is explained ( "confederation of co-operating networks") with predefined rules related to interconnection.

The term catenet is mentioned in RFC 777 and RFC 792 ( Internet Control Message Protocol by Jon Postel ).
