Catocala angusi is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae). The specific epithet honors the American entomologist James Angus, whodiscoveredthe species .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 60 to 74 millimeters. The color of the upper side of the forewing varies from ash-gray to bluish-gray to black-gray and is marbled in the typical form with dark brown. Inner and outer transverse lines are black and strongly jagged. Ring and kidney defects are often indistinct. In the color variant known as forma lucetta , a black stripe extends from the wing root to the outer edge . The upper side of the hind wing is unmarked black-brown.

distribution and habitat

Catocala angusi occurs widely to locally in the eastern and central regions of North America. The species primarily inhabits deciduous forests.

Way of life

The nocturnal, univoltine moths can be found between July and October. You visit artificial light sources and baits . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various types of hickory ( Carya ). Sometimes it can be harmful to pecan trees ( Carya illinoinensis ) . The species overwinters in the egg stage.
