Cayos Zapatilla is a group of islands that consists of two uninhabited islands and is surrounded by coral reefs . The islands are located east of the island of Bastimentos in the province of Bocas del Toro , the Central American state of Panama . Both islands are within the boundaries of the Bastimentos Island National Park . Zapatilla Norte (Cayo Zapatilla No. 2) covers 14 ha (hectares) and can be explored in about ten minutes. Zapatilla Sur (Cayo Zapatilla No. 1) is a little larger with 34 ha (hectares) and can be explored in about 30 minutes. Both Zapatilla Norte and Zapatilla Sur are overgrown with woodland and palm trees. Four species of turtles come to the beaches of the two islands to nest during the rainy season each year. For this reason, Zapatilla Norte is sometimes used as a basis for scientists to research the nesting behavior of turtles. The crystal clear water around the islands is six meters deep at the deepest point and is therefore perfect for snorkeling. Among the fish that can be seen while snorkeling are u. a. Atlantic spade fish , groupers , snapper and parrot fish . You can also camp for free on Zapatilla Sur.
