In 1893 Carl Christian Schäfer founded the Hertler & Schäfer tricot factory. Four years later, the company became the Ceceba brand, the name of which is formed from the initials of the founder CC Schäfer and the company headquarters in Balingen. While underwear was still made for men, women and children at the beginning, the company later specialized in day and nightwear for men.

In 1921 Erwin Schäfer joined the company to support his father. In 1933 the workforce numbered around 200 people. The company founder died in 1944 and Erwin Schäfer took over sole responsibility. In the post-war period, the company, which was badly damaged by bomb damage and the dismantling of machinery and equipment, was rebuilt. The time of the German economic miracle in the early 1950s brought further upswing. The expansion of the factories as well as new buildings, modernization and automation were characteristic of this time. In 1966 Wolfgang and Helmut Schäfer inherited their father in the management. Under her aegis, Ceceba became the official supplier of the German Olympic team in 1972 for the Summer Games in Munich and Winter Games in Sapporo, 1976 for the Summer Games in Montreal and Winter Games in Innsbruck, 1980 for the Summer Games in Moscow and Winter Games in Lake Placid and the Summer Games in Los Angeles 1984. 1982–1991 Ceceba was the German licensee of the American brand Champion . The company advertises with the national handball league club HBW Balingen-Weilstetten , the German Handball Federation and some regional football clubs in the major league.

Since 1989, Ceceba has been run by Jürgen Schäfer in the fourth generation. In addition, the management was supported by Peter Rentsch from 2016 to 2018.

In 2017, the new online shop for end customers called Maskador and, in parallel, Maskador GmbH was launched.
