Cecilia Hidalgo Tapia (* 1941 ) is a Chilean biochemist . She was the first female natural science doctorate at the university in Chile . In 2006 she was the first woman to receive the national science award.

Life

Hidalgo graduated from the University of Chile and graduated in biochemistry in 1965. Four years later she received her doctorate from the same university . She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Health Institute in the United States. Between 1992 and 1993 she received the Guggenheim grant.

Between 1984 and 2002 she lectured at the Center for Scientific Studies (Centro de Estudios Científicos) and since 1984 also at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Chile. From 1995 to 2001 she was a member of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Science. Between 2001 and 2003 she headed the program of the Institute for Cell Biology and Molecular Biomedicine. She is the director of the FONDAP Center for Molecular Cell Studies and a member of the Medical Faculty of the University of Chile. She is also Vice President of the Advisory Commission for the Young Scientists Foundation.

In 2004 she was awarded the Amanda Labaras Medal of Merit by the University of Chile. This honors women who have made extraordinary contributions to culture and their country in their professional field. In 2006 she was the first woman to receive the national science award. One of her areas of study is the regulation of the calcium content within the cell.
