Ceefax

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ceefax [ siːˈfæks ] (from English see facts ) was the teletext of the BBC .

The system was announced in October 1972. After test pages in 1973 and 1974, Ceefax began on September 23, 1974 as the first teletext system in the world with 30 pages. Originally it was only intended to provide subtitles for the hearing impaired. However, it was soon expanded to other areas.

Soon the system became the international de facto standard and supplanted systems like the French Antiope system. In Germany it was introduced under the name Teletext by ARD and ZDF on June 1, 1980 in a field trial.

From 1983 to 1989 Ceefax broadcast programs for the BBC Micro PC.

Apart from minor changes, such as the introduction of color (1976) and the four colored shortcut buttons (1990), the technology remained practically the same. Ceefax was now only broadcast in analog format, the digital programs showed the BBC Red Button instead . Ceefax - together with all analog programs - was switched off on October 23, 2012.
