The route was about 155 meters long and connected the horticultural and agricultural pavilions in Fairmont Park. A Victorian-style double-decker train ran on it. It had two drive wheels, the rear of which was driven by a steam engine.

The concept was similar to that of the Lartigue monorail : the carrier rail was mounted on an A-shaped frame on which upright double flange wheels ran. There were also two side guide rails to balance the vehicle. The height difference between the mounting rail and the guide rails was 1,346 mm (4 feet 5 inches ). The carrying wheels were 711 mm (28 inches) in diameter, and one of them was powered by a La France rotary steam engine. The design of the boiler was like that of conventional steam locomotives 6,400 mm (21 feet) long and with a diameter of 34 inches. The driver's cab was arranged at one of the two ends and underneath, on the side of the guide rail, there was a storage container for water and one for coal on both sides, so that the weight balance was achieved.

A modified version of the Centennial Monorail was commissioned by the Bradford and Foster Brook Railway in 1878 .
