Center for Icelandic Art

The Center for Icelandic Art , or CIA.IS for short ( Icelandic : Kynningarmiðstöð íslenskrar myndlistar ) is an institution for the international networking of Icelandic visual arts. The CIA.IS was founded as an independent association in 2005 under the leadership of the Ministry of Education, Research and Culture. The seat is in Reykjavík .

Carrier in addition to the state and municipal museums ( National Gallery of Iceland , Reykjavík Art Museum , Art Museum Akureyri , Living Art Museum ) of the Union of Artists of SIM , the association for the protection of copyrights Myndstef , the State Department and the Icelandic Trade Office.

With the online magazine LIST icelandic art news , the CIA.IS has published an internationally oriented art magazine. The German art scholar and curator Christian Schoen headed the institution from 2005 to 2010 . Dorothée Kirch has been the director of the CIA.IS since March 2010.

The center is located in Reykjavík (Lækjargata 3). There the visitor can find all important up-to-date information about Icelandic artists and art institutions. In addition, a library and a DVD archive are freely available to visitors. So the visitor can get a good insight into the Icelandic art scene.

The websites offer information on all museums, galleries and other art institutions. The UMM.IS database provides information on Icelandic artists, their works and projects. The website also provides all the information you need about the CIA.IS funding program for Icelandic artists and contacts to the international art world.

Cooperations and projects

The association works together on projects with national and / or international partners. Current cooperation projects are, for example, the SEQUENCES real-time art festival in Reykjavík or the exhibition project “HOMESICK” .

La Biennale di Venezia

The Icelandic pavilion at the 52nd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia - was the first to be supervised by the CIA.IS. Since then, the CIA.IS has taken on the organization of the Venice Biennale.
