Akureyri Art Museum

The Art Museum Akureyri ( Icelandic Listafnið á Akureyri ) in Akureyri is the largest art museum in Iceland outside the commuting area of Reykjavik .

History and geography

The museum was established in 1993 in a former dairy that operated until 1980 and is an example of Icelandic Bauhaus-style architecture . The building was designed by the Icelandic architect Ðórir Baldvinsson , who worked for the Icelandic cooperative association Samband íslenskra samvinnufélaga . It is located in the city center of Iceland's second largest city in the north of the country.

Exhibition work

The well-known Icelandic artists Erró , Kjarval and Louisa Matthíasdóttir have exhibited in the museum alongside foreign artists such as the American Spencer Tunick and the Israeli video artist Guy Ben-Ner . An exhibition on the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson has also been shown so far .

In 2006 the museum hosted the first Icelandic Visual Arts Awards ceremony .
