Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (born October 15, 1885 in Efri-Ey, Iceland , † April 13, 1972 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic painter.

The painter, born as Jóhannes Sveinsson (a patronymic ), grew up in the countryside in the area of Borgarfjörður eystri in the east fjords . The painter became famous on the one hand for his unusually realistic depictions of the Icelandic landscape, on the other hand for his mystical works in which legendary figures, elves and trolls are at work. In 1910 he took the nickname "Kjarval".

He studied painting in Reykjavík and Copenhagen with study visits to Italy and England. In 1950 he built a summer house in East Iceland, which he named Kjarvalshvammur. In Reykjavík he has his own museum ( Kjarvalsstaðir ).

His portrait and one of his pictures are printed on the 2000 Kronur banknote .

He is buried on Hólavallagarður in Reykjavík.

The Icelandic singer Björk dedicated a self-composed piece to him on her debut album from 1977 when she was 11 years old.
