Central Única dos Trabalhadores

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The CUT is the Central Única dos Trabalhadores , the largest trade union umbrella organization in Brazil . It was founded in 1983 .

It has 3806 member unions (as of 2016) at the national, state and city levels. In Brazil, unions are organized by sector at local or regional level. It thus stands for around 7.8 million members. The total base of the workforce represented by CUT is given as around 24 million workers.

Its history is closely linked to the Workers' Party of Brazil, the PT ( Partido dos Trabalhadores ), but both organizations emphasize their independence from one another. Its emergence and rapid growth are the result of the powerful strikes and workers' demonstrations that rocked Brazil in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These battles shook the military dictatorship and formed the beginning of a development that ended a few years later.

When it was founded, the CUT expressly broke off any formal relationship with one of the existing world trade union confederations.
