Centrala studiestödsnämnden (CSN) is the Swedish national authority that administers the state economic support for schoolchildren and students. The seat of the authority, founded in 1964 under the name Centrala studiehjälpsnämnden , is Sundsvall . CSN is an authority subordinate to the Ministry of Culture .

Forms of support managed by CSN

  • Study hjälp (study aid ) for high school students between 16 and 20 years of age.
  • Study fee for students at universities, colleges, adult education centers and evening schools. Student contribution consists of a grant and a loan. The payments are limited to six years of study and are only made during the lecture period, i. H. not during the semester break. In 2015 the study fee was 9948 kroner (approx. 1050 euros) for four weeks of full-time studies. 7,120 kroner (approx. 750 euros) were loans.
  • A grant for travel expenses is granted for disabled people who attend a school far away from their parents' home.

Studienhjälp and Studiebidrag are tax-free. The amount of the disbursed funds is independent of the income of the parents and own assets. Students are allowed to earn up to 53,500 kroner (approx. 5600 euros) per calendar half-year without reducing their study funds.

CSN also makes loans to overseas residents to purchase kitchen equipment and furniture. The authority is also responsible for providing official statistics in the field of financial support in the training sector.

Foreign citizens are also entitled to support from CSN under certain conditions.
