Centro Colombo

The Centro Colombo is a shopping center in the borough Carnide the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It was built directly on the Segunda Circular ring road and opened on September 15, 1997. Until the Dolce Vita Tejo was built, it was the largest shopping center in Portugal in terms of sales area with 119,725 m² - also the largest on the Iberian Peninsula. With 347 individual stores, it continues to offer the largest range.

The Centro Colombo is one of several major projects that were implemented in Lisbon in the run-up to the Expo 98 world exhibition . With direct access to the Colégio Militar / Luz underground station , it is connected to the Linha Azul , which, with the extension to Pontinha , which was built at the same time, also connects the populous areas in the north of Lisbon to the shopping center.

The leitmotif for the design was the era of the Portuguese discoveries in the 15th century, one of the most important periods in the history of Portugal . The names of the squares and streets inside the shopping center, such as Avenida dos Descobrimentos or Praça Trópico de Câncer , refer to expeditions by Portuguese seafarers. Fountains with maritime figures or a large globe as well. Between 2007 and 2009 the building was completely renovated and the interior design was supplemented with contemporary elements.

The original design also envisaged the construction of two flanking, approximately 30 meter high office skyscrapers, the Torres do Colombo . They were built much later due to legal proceedings. The tower on the east side was opened in May 2009, the tower on the west side in February 2011.

Several large retail chains, such as Fnac , Zara , Sport Zone , Vobis , Continente and Words have branches in the Centro Colombo . The offer is supplemented by a wide range of services and a multiplex cinema .
