Cestus (garment)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cestus is among the Greeks and Romans , a belt laced women just below the chest.

This is to be distinguished from the cingulum , the belt that girdles the garment around the waist . A distinction must be made between the similar sounding Caestus , which means the glove of the pugilist .

history

At first the Cestus was called στρόφιον ( stróphion ) by the Greeks . It was only when the Romans used the term κεστός ( kestós , actually “ embroidered ”) for the belt itself that the Greeks also adopted this term.
