The Chūzenji Lake ( Japanese 中 禅寺 湖 , Chūzenji-ko ) is a picturesque lake in Nikkō National Park in the area of the city of Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture in Japan . It is named after the temple that lies on its southeast bank.
Overview
The lake was formed 20,000 years ago when the Nantai volcano erupted and blocked the Daiyagawa River .
It has an area of 11.9 km² and a circumference of 22 km. Its surface is 1,269 m, the water is up to 163 m deep, so it doesn't freeze over in winter. The Yukawa River (with the Ryūzu Falls ) is the most important inlet, the lake drains through the Kegon Falls in the Ōshiri .
