Chalkos from the city of Colophon

Chalkos ( ancient Greek χαλκός copper , Latin chalcus ) is the name of a coin in ancient Greece . It was a copper coin worth 1/8  obolus or 1/48 drachmon . As a Greek measure of weight , it was also 1/48 drachma, i.e. about 125 mg.

In the Roman Empire , too , chalcus was a measure of weight and corresponded to 71 mg, since the Roman drachma was only 25/32 as heavy as the Greek.
