Challah (mixed natractic)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Challa / חלה (dt. Teighebe) is a treatise of the Mishnah in the order Sera'im ("seeds, seeds").

Text transmission

In the case of the manuscripts that are significant for the mixed text , it is noticeable that the third chapter is missing in the Munich manuscript. Presumably it was omitted due to the carelessness of a copyist, because the fourth chapter is regularly counted as such. It is interesting, however, that the Kaufmann and Munich manuscripts offer a much longer ending than the other manuscripts and the print.

content

The starting point for the provisions in the treatise Challah can be found in the Torah . So it says:

"The first of your dough you should offer a cake as an offering."

- Numbers 15.20a

Structurally similar regulations on firstfruits also exist for the firstborn of animals, firstfruits, etc. The Mischnatraktat Challah treats in its four chapters a. a. following question:

  • Which types of grain and which dough are required to provide the challah ?
  • From what quantities is a dough subject to challa?
  • What about the challah in relation to imported / exported grain?
  • How should doughs made by non-Jews , mixed doughs and others be treated?

The conclusion of the treatise is an aggadic piece with example cases , to which, however, a section on "24 gifts given to the priests" is appended in the Kaufmann and Munich manuscripts.

Tosefta and Talmud

There is a treatise on Challah in Tosefta , which, however, differs more than usual from the Mishnah. There is also a Gemara in the Talmud Yeruschalmi. The Babylonian Talmud, on the other hand, knows just as little of the challah as the other tracts of the Sera'im order, apart from Berachot .
