Chambered Cairn at the Ward of Symbister Ness
The Chambered Cairn at the Ward of Symbister Ness is a Neolithic megalithic complex at the highest point of the Symbister Ness headland in the southwest of the island of Whalsay, part of the Scottish Shetlands . It is located about 400 meters southwest of Symbister Bay, a bay on whose banks the historic core of the island's capital, Symbister, extends. The name Ward already indicates the presence of a cairn on the top of the mountain.
It is a heel-shaped cairn , the remains of which consist of a collection of stones protruding up to 70 centimeters from the ground. In the middle there is a modern cairn , which was probably built over the no longer existing burial chamber. The complex has been designated as a Scheduled Monument since 1974 and is therefore a listed building.
