Chapeau!
Chapeau! [ ʃaˈpoː ] is an exclamation of recognition also used in the German language area. It comes from the French language and is an interjection .
meaning
Chapeau means hat in the literal French-German translation . As a chapeau! the expression is used especially in the family or sporting area in the sense of hats off !, I take my hat off to you , all attention !, Bravo .
According to Jutta Limbach , this exclamation testifies to “[…] real joy and appreciation for another person and their performance […] and expresses surprise, but not astonishment […]”. " Immigrant words" like chapeau are particularly suitable for closing language gaps in interpersonal relationships. Contrary to respect! rather, it implies dignity and pride, sounds less like submissiveness.
In southeast Germany , chapeau means ! too boy, boy! or look, look! . At the Tour de France , Chapeau is next to À la bonne heure! the usual tribute to the great, outstanding performance of a driver.
