Char-à-Côté

Char-à-Côté, around 1830

A char-à-côté (French: 'wagon to the side') is a carriage in which the passengers sat sideways in order to better observe the landscape while taking a walk or to be able to better show themselves.

This fashion came up with the enthusiasm for landscape gardening and park design around 1800, but the vehicles were only made in small numbers.
