Kharkhorin ( Mongolian Хархорин ) is a sum and its administrative center in the Öwörchangai-Aimag (province) of Mongolia .

Nearby are the ruins of Karakorum , which briefly served as the capital of the Mongolian Empire in the Middle Ages . The Erdene Dsuu monastery also dates from this period. Another monastery worth seeing is Töwchön Chiid, around 60 km away .

Kharkhorin is located in the Orkhon River valley , about 320 km west of Ulaanbaatar . The cultural landscape of the valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . In this area, the eastern foothills of the Changai Mountains meet the grass steppes of central Mongolia.

The main industries in Kharkhorin are tourism and agriculture. The water of the Orkhon is used to irrigate the fertile plain east of the city.

traffic

Kharkhorin Airport (KHR / ZMHH) has an unpaved runway and is served by regular flights to and from Ulaanbaatar.
