Charles Chong (born June 24, 1953 ) is a former politician from Singapore , a former member of the People's Action Party , he is also the former incumbent Speaker of Parliament and represents the constituency of Punggol East SMC.

Politician

Chong represented the constituency Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in Nee Soon East from 1988 to 1991 and the Eunos GRC in Pasir Ris from 1991 to 1996 , the Pasir Ris GRC in Elias from 1997 to 2001 and the Pasir Ris - Punggol GRC in Punggol South and Punggol Central from 2001 to 2011 and Joo Chiat Single Member Constituency (SMC) from 2011 to 2015. He currently represents Punggol East SMC and has been since 2015.

Chong denied the constituency of Joo Chiat SMC in the 2011 parliamentary elections after its incumbent MP Chan Soo Sen left politics. He won 9,666 or 51.02% of the vote against Yee Jenn Jong of the Labor Party. Chong was elected deputy spokesman in the 12th parliament.

In the 2015 parliamentary elections , the PAP replaced Chong in opposition-held SMC Punggol East, removing incumbent Lee Li Lian from the Labor Party with 51.76% of the vote. His victory was questioned by Png Eng Huat of the Labor Party. With Chong making a wild allegation against the Punggol East City Council for a lack of funds valued at $ 22.5 million just two days before election day, the Labor Party was unable to respond in time due to the restrictions on election day on cool down day. It is also the same year that Charles Chong is also retiring from Singapore Airlines .

In December 2016, Chong announced that he was diagnosed with alcohol-free steatohepatitis three years ago and that he had a liver transplant on December 1, 2016, which his younger son Glenn donated part of his liver. He was given 8 weeks of medical leave and his duty was covered by Teo Chee Hean during his absence.

On January 11, 2018, Chong was named chairman of the selection board for deliberate online lies. His appointment has been controversial on charges of spreading falsehood during the 2015 general election, alleging that Punggol East SMC got into financial trouble after the Workers' party took over from PAP in 2013.

Charles Chong announced his resignation in the 2020 general election, but he has been succeeded by Raymond Lye since November 2019.
