Charpentier's illusion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Charpentier illusion , also called size-weight illusion , is a perception illusion . It is present when, of two bodies of equal weight, the one with the larger volume appears lighter. For example, a 10 liter bucket filled with water gives the impression that it weighs less than a 10 kg brick.

The description of the effect from 1891 is attributed to Augustin Charpentier (1852–1916).
