The Chennai Central railway station ( Tamil : சென்னை சென்ட்ரல் ), officially Puratchi thalaivar Dr. MG Ramachandran Central Railway Station ( புரட்சித் தலைவர் டாக்டர் எம். ஜி. இராமச்சந்திரன் மத்திய ரயில் நிலையம் ), formerly Madras Central, is the largest railway station in Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The station opened in 1873 during the British colonial era . The station building, built in the Indo-Sarrazen colonial style, was designed by Henry Irwin and is one of the landmarks of Chennai.

The railhead Chennai Central is located in the district of Parktown in the center of Chennai. Chennai Central has numerous connections to more distant cities across India, while Chennai Egmore , the city's second major train station, serves mostly routes within Tamil Nadu. Chennai Central has eleven long-distance tracks. Chennai Central station is followed by a separate station for suburban traffic with a further three tracks. Right next to the station is the headquarters of the Southern Railway , one of the regional companies of Indian Railways .

In 2019 the station was officially opened by Chennai Central in Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MG Ramachandran Central Railway Station (after the politician MG Ramachandran ) renamed. With 57 letters, the name of the station is the longest station name in India. He just missed the world record holder Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (58 letters).
