Cherpunkal is a village in the Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala . The place is best known for its Holy Cross Church, which is said to have been donated personally by the Apostle Thomas . The name of the place Cherpunkal is derived from "cherupu" ( Malayalam ചെരുപ്പ് , "shoe"). According to tradition, the Apostle Thomas left his sandals in a tributary of the Meenachil River . The church is a pilgrimage center for the Thomas Christians in Kerala. Church and parish belong to the Eparchy Palai of the Syro-Malabar Church . The Mar Sleeva Medicity is a hospital in Cherpunkal.
