Cheyenne (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheyenne is a male and female given name.

The name goes back to the Cheyenne Indian tribe belonging to the Algonquin Association . The name is derived from Dakota Šahíyena , "little Šahíya ". The meaning of Šahíya itself is unknown, but is assigned to the Algonquin speakers . The creew word for the Ojibwa, however, is " Sáhea'eo'o ," which is similar to Šahíya . The most common folk etymology is "Anderssprecher" (literally red speaker ).

The use of the name is still controversial in the German-speaking world. However, it is recognized and was one of the 150 most popular girls' first names in 2006 and 2007.
