Chief Digital Officer

The Chief Digital Officer ( CDO ) is usually a position in the top management level of companies (C-Level position) who is responsible for planning and controlling the digital transformation of a company or organization. The most important task is usually the development of a basic digitization strategy and its integration into already existing structures. The CDO often takes a leading role within the company and makes decisions that can affect all levels and areas of the organizational hierarchy.

Dissemination and criticism

The position of Chief Digital Officer has only been known in Germany for a few years and is therefore hardly widespread. In 2016, only 2% of German companies with more than 500 employees had a CDO. The trend towards corresponding positions is nevertheless increasing - especially in medium- sized companies and in corporations .

In connection with the new position of Chief Digital Officer, general conditions such as the still unclear role definition within the company are often criticized. For this reason, there is also talk of “ actionism without a strategy ”, since the CDO often creates a role with far-reaching objectives, but without the necessary decision-making authority. For this reason, not only is the number of active CDOs increasing, but also the number of ex-CDOs. The share in this regard was around 30% of all CDOs in the DACH region in the period 2012–2019.
