Chiesa di San Ciro

Chiesa di San Ciro is a church building in Palermo .

At the foot of Monte Grifone, above a spring that was consecrated to the fertility goddess Ceres in ancient times , Father Girolamo Matranga built a small Lady Chapel in 1656. In 1735, instead of the chapel, the current church was built, which was restored for the first time in 1826 and again in 1874 when a relic and a statue of Saint Ciro were moved here. Blasting in a nearby quarry resulted in severe damage, which made it necessary to close the church and, from 1982, a thorough renovation.

The late baroque façade, partly plastered and made of quarry stone, is structured by strongly emphasized pilaster strips . The lower storey is dominated by a high portal, above whose lintel a segmented gable with a stucco frame above closes the portal zone.

A cranked cornice divides the facade, and a three-part semi-arched window extends over almost the entire width of the upper floor. The facade is completed by a triangular gable. Vases as gable crowns adorn the corners of the facade.

The simple, single-nave interior is designed as a three-corner system. The only adornments are the pillars and pilasters adorned with vine leaves and whose capitals are connected by a surrounding cornice .
