Chilanga Cement is a public limited company in Zambia in Chilanga a few kilometers south of Lusaka .

history

The company was founded in 1949 by the Government of Northern Rhodesia and the Commonwealth Development Corporation . In the 1950s, shares in this company were sold to Anglo American and Premier Portland Cement . By 1957 the company was completely privatized. In 1973 it was nationalized again when the Zambian government acquired the majority of the shares. In 1994, it became the first Zambian state-owned company to be re-privatized by the Commonwealth Development Corporation increasing its stake to 50 percent and demanding the board positions for itself. The remaining shares in Zambia were offered in 1995. Cilanga Cement became the first Zambian company to be listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange .

The core business of Chilanga Cement is the manufacture of cement and cement products such as clinker bricks, slabs, etc. It produces in Chilanga with 226 employees and in Ndola with 215 employees. The total number of employees, i.e. nationwide, is given as 850 for 2006. Its sales in 2002 were US $ 15.1 million. Its biggest customer is the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines . The most important export markets are Burundi , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Malawi , Zimbabwe and Tanzania . In 2006, the production capacities are considered to be fully utilized at almost 350,000 t and thus exhausted. Chilanga Cement is the only cement producer in Zambia. In November 2006, President Levy Mwanawasa laid the foundation stone for a new plant in Lusaka, through which total production should reach 600,000 t per year. This investment is $ 100 million.

Since 2003 Chilanga Cement has been a member of the Lafarge Group , whose headquarters are in Paris and which operates production facilities for cement, gypsum and cement products in 54 countries. Lafarge has acquired an entire holding company with cement plant shares in Africa from Commonwealth Development Corporation , Pan African Cement , which owns shares in Chilanga Cement in Zambia (84.5 percent), Mbeya Cement in Tanzania and Portland Cement in Malawi.
