The China Southwest Airlines Flight 4146 (Flight number: SZ4146 ) was a scheduled domestic flight from Beijing to Chongqing . On January 18, 1988, this flight was carried out with an Ilyushin Il-18D . A serious incident occurred when one engine caught fire and tore off during the flight and another failed. The plane crashed uncontrollably, killing all 108 people on board.
plane
The aircraft was an Ilyushin Il-18D from Soviet production. The machine had the factory number 187009901 and was first delivered to the CAAC in 1967 , where it received the aircraft registration number 222 , which was changed to B-222 in 1974 . The four-engine long - range narrow -body aircraft was equipped with four Iwtschenko AI-20M turboprop engines with four-blade propellers.
Passengers and crew
There was a crew of ten on board. For the flight from Beijing to Chongqing, 98 passengers were seated in the plane. 104 of the occupants of the machine were citizens of the People's Republic of China, there were also three Japanese and one British passenger on board.
Course of the flight and course of the accident
The Il-18 took off from Beijing at 7:05 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at 9:58 p.m. As the machine approached Chongqing, engine No. 4 caught fire. After a short time, the fire burned down the engine pylon, so that the engine eventually tore off the wing and fell to the ground. After that, the crew found it difficult to keep the aircraft under control until they could no longer maintain the altitude. While trying to make an emergency landing, the machine got caught in high-voltage lines, brushed against two peasant huts and finally hit a flat slope at 10:17:16 p.m. where it went up in flames. All 108 occupants were killed in the accident.
root cause
It turned out that the fire was caused by an oil leak. Strong vibrations had occurred during the flight, which is why engine no. 4 was switched off during flight and the associated propeller was brought into the sail position . In the meantime, the starter of the engine had overheated to such an extent that it burned the high pressure oil supply line of the propeller adjustment. When the crew switched the propeller to the sail position, the line broke and the oil caught fire.
The accident was attributed to poor maintenance. Shortly after the accident, the CAAC initiated security checks. During the inspections, technical defects were discovered that resulted in at least 17 machines being banned from operation.
