Chinese Garden (Singapore)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chinese Garden is a garden in Jurong East in the west of Singapore , which was laid out according to the principles of Chinese garden art . Designed by Taiwanese architect Yuen-Chen Yu , the 13.5-hectare facility opened on April 18, 1975. The nearby MRT station has the same name.

construction

The garden follows the architecture of the Song Dynasty (960–1279) and is also based on the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Classic Gardens of Suzhou . It is located on an island in Jurong Lake and is connected to the Japanese Garden on the neighboring island by a bridge. The following sights are worth highlighting:

  • Stone lions: Two stone lions made of marble greet visitors at the main entrance in the west.
  • White Rainbow Bridge: The 13-arch bridge leads from the main entrance to the island. She takes the Seventeen Arch Bridge in the Summer Palace in Beijing as a model.
  • Main building: The main building with its distinctive entrance gates houses a small pond with ornamental fish and two inner courtyards.
  • Stone boat and tea house: two elements that can also be found in the Summer Palace in Beijing, located by the large pond in the garden.
  • Pagodas: The 48 m high, seven-story pagoda near the east entrance is clearly visible from afar and is a core element of the garden. The so-called twin pagodas are located on the west bank of the island.
  • Confucius statue: In 1985 a 10 m high bronze status of the Chinese philosopher was erected at the pond.
  • Bridge of double beauty: This bridge was built in 1989, which connects the Chinese Garden with the Japanese Garden.
  • Bonsai Garden: Opened in 1992, it is home to over 2000 bonsai trees from China, Taiwan, Japan and Southeast Asia.
  • The Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum: The museum opened in 2002 and houses a number of species of turtles.
  • Garden of Diversity: This section in the eastern part was created in 2002 and is known for the sculptures of the Chinese zodiac signs .
  • Eight Heroes: In 2007, the statues of legendary Chinese personalities were moved from Marina's City Park Sculpture Garden to the Chinese Garden and are located near the seven-story pagoda.

Redesign

Like the adjacent Japanese Garden, it is currently being renovated and will be part of Jurong Lake Gardens from 2021 - together with the Lakeside Garden on the west bank of Jurong Lake, which opened in 2019, and the Garden Promenade on the east bank, which will also open in 2021.
