Life

The Emerald Buddha

Chiraprapha was a daughter of King Ket Chettharat (ruled 1526 to 1538) and became queen in a time of great upheaval for Lan Na. She was made queen while the nobles sought the king of the Lao Empire of Lan Xang , Setthathirat , as their new ruler.

Chairacha , King of Ayutthaya , tried to take advantage of Lan Na's problems and take over the land. In order to save her empire, Chiraprapha welcomed the enemy in a friendly way at the temple Wat Lok Moli . Behind her back, however, she drove the journey from Setthathirat to Luang Phrabang .

Setthathirat took the throne from Lan Na in 1546 and Chiraprapha became his queen. When Setthathirat returned to Laos because he had to fear for his throne there, his new queen accompanied him with the highly revered Buddha image , the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaeo) .
