Chocolatey is an application-oriented package manager for Windows operating systems developed by Rob Reynolds since 2011 . It can be controlled via the optional GUI or with text commands in the command line ( input prompt or PowerShell ). It automates downloading , installing and updating applications.
The text mode simplifies and speeds up the installation of a large number of applications. In addition, all applications installed with Chocolatey can be updated choco upgrade all -y
very efficiently using .
The graphical user interface must first be installed with the help of in choco install chocolateygui
order to be able to manage packages comfortably.
From a technical point of view, you use the free open source package management NuGet , which can also be used for software development under .NET . This is where the name Chocolatey (= chocolaty ) is derived, as "NuGet" sounds similar to nougat in English .
The software accesses an extensive and constantly growing repository with approx. 7600 (as of June 2020) different freeware packages. The repository is maintained by a community.

Chocolatey also serves as the basis for Boxstarter, a tool for automating complex installation work (for example, the quick setup of developer PCs).
