choices , subtitle: Kultur.Kino.Köln, is a monthly magazine for culture, cinema and education in Cologne. It exists as a print and online version and was founded in 1989. The publisher is Berndt Media-Verlag in Bochum.

history

choices was founded in April 1989 as a cinema magazine. The background was that several film makers to Art Heinz Holzapfel and Peter Liese from 1982 cinemas in Cologne, Wuppertal, Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Essen and Aachen opened and were promoting with program notes. The Cologne magazine Lichtblick was taken over in spring 1989 by Joachim Berndt, together with Peter Debüser and Reiner Michalke , and renamed choices . The model was the New York culture magazine The Village Voice . choices was initially a pure film arts magazine . With him, the founders wanted to follow up on the film programs of the post-war period and the Cahiers du cinéma . In the mid-1990s, the content was expanded to include mainstream films. On the initiative of editor Rüdiger Schmidt-Sodingen, theater reviews have also been published since the early 2000s, which have become a separate theater part. Subsequently, the categories music, dance, art, exhibition, stage and literature were created. Furthermore, in 2006 there was a monthly focus on current, socio-political questions, guided by the considerations “How do we want to live !?” and “Does the European Enlightenment have a future ?!”. The film reviews became a separate middle section, choices-roots . Today choices consists of current reporting on the entire spectrum of metropolitan culture. Events in Cologne, Bonn, Leverkusen and the surrounding area are discussed. The website was installed in 2002.

The Cologne editorial office was first in Bickendorf, then in the south of the old town and is now in the Belgian Quarter. Following the example of choices , the magazines engels (Wuppertal) and Trailer (Ruhrgebiet) were founded by Berndt Media-Verlag in 2001 . Initially, editing, graphics, sales and advertising acquisition were in the hands of publisher Joachim Berndt. There has been a deputy editor-in-chief since 2004 and an editor-in-chief since 2011, who is responsible for all three magazines.

Edition

choices is a member of the information community for determining the distribution of advertising media (IVW), which controls the circulation externally. This means that the magazine now has a unique selling point among Cologne's monthly magazines. The combination of choices , engels , trailer and biograph (Düsseldorf) has a circulation of 104,333 copies / month. The print edition of choices has a print run of 27,257 copies. In addition to subscription sales, booklets are published in cinemas, theaters, advance booking offices, operas, universities, cultural institutes, hotels, galleries, restaurants, bookshops and trade fairs. According to Google Analytics, the websites of choices , trailer , engels and biograph reach around 500,000 page impressions and around 100,000 unique users per month. There are also Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Alignment

choices sees itself as a left-liberal cultural magazine. The aim is to reflect the content and intellectual diversity of society and to contribute to the culture of debate in the region. The website www.kultur-kino-bildung.de, which presents the best articles from choices , trailer , engels and biograph , uses the motto " Shaping Europe" to express the content of the secular culture of Europe.

Logo and design choices has been amended three times. The first cover picture in April 1989 had a coarse-grained moirée effect with a deliberate blurring, which was very well received. The lettering was slanted and folded. The second logo was introduced in December 1994. The third change in logo and font is still in use today.

reception

A reader survey showed that the proportion is highest in the 30 to 34 age group. Two thirds are women. 65% have a degree. The reader loyalty through the content is rated as "very good". The focus of interest is still in the cinema area. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary in 2009, numerous personalities from public life expressed their appreciation for choices .
