Chris Colorado is set in a grim, not too distant future on earth. After a software processing bug prevents mankind from being warned of a meteorite falling on earth , it strikes in the middle of one of the world's capitals. Despite an attempt at defense, which at least prevented its complete annihilation in the form of a frontal collision of the meteorite with the earth, almost the entire human civilization was wiped out by the impact. After a while, the survivors formed a world government that was under World President Richard Jullian for most of the series. The seat of government is the Mayan city of Chichen-Itza .

After a few decades of peace, the dictator Thanatos, a man who always hides his face under a mask, started a war with the help of an army of people who had converted to cyborgs , as a result of which he gained control over Europe. However, a group of fighters under the leadership of Richard Julian managed to defeat his armed force, whereupon he withdrew to the world capital destroyed by the meteorite. There he managed to use a strange substance, the "Black River", which emerged from the remains of the meteorite, to build a new army from the survivors of the city. The story begins when world leader Julian recruits the former pilot and martial artist Christopher Krantz, who is sometimes called Chris Colorado, and reveals to him that he is the son of Wilhelm-Erwin Krantz. This was once supposed to infiltrate Thanato's army, but he evidently defected to the enemy and was branded a traitor by everyone, including his son.
