Christ the Savior Church (Oral)
The Church of Christ the Savior ( Russian Храм Христа Спасителя ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the city of Oral in Kazakhstan . It was built from 1891 to 1907. The church belongs to the Russian Orthodox Eparchy Oral and Aqtöbe .
history
The church was built for 16 years from 1891. The foundation stone was laid on July 31, 1891 in the presence of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II . The building, decorated with golden domes, was inaugurated in 1907. The cathedral was originally located on the city's Ikanskoy Square, but it no longer exists today.
During the time Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union , the building was used as a museum of atheism . A planetarium was housed in one of the domes. In November 1990 the Church of Christ the Savior was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In the 1990s, on the initiative of the population, the building was renovated and converted back into a place of worship.
The large dome called "Great Svatoslav" was made in Moscow and placed on the church tower in October 1995. The church is also called the Golden Church by the locals .
