Christoph Brandis (* in Werl , Westphalia ; † March 10, 1658 in Rüthen in Westphalia) was Mayor of Rüthen and historian.

Life

Brandis was a Werler heirloom . He came to Rüthen probably through the family connections of his mother, who came from the Burgmann family there from Bruwerdinchusen . He lived there in the ancestral home of the maternal family in the area of the Oester peasantry of the city. In his honor, the place was called Brandiseck in the 19th century. He was married twice - his first marriage to Barbara, the widow of the former mayor of Rüthen, Hellwig von Loen, who died in 1608. Second marriage to Maria Torwesten from Geseke, from which three daughters emerged, Anna, Anna Maria and the later childless Agnes Barbara.

Brandis quickly gained a reputation in the city. He defended her rights against attempts by the elector to intervene. He was mayor of the city in 1652 and 1656 and also represented it as a deputy in the state parliament of the Duchy of Westphalia .

In the trial against the electoral judge Schellewald, he presented a large number of documents as evidence and thus probably became aware of the content of the city archive.

On this basis he wrote a history of the city of Rüthen. In addition to the history of the city, this contains a lot of information on the history of the Westphalian state in general. This work was used by other early modern historians such as Johann Dietrich von Steinen for their work. In a first part he described the general history of the city up to the end of the Thirty Years War . In a second part, Brandis described the noble and patrician families of the city. The work was later supplemented by a Conrad Röingh with a third part. This deals with the economy and city law.

Brandis also wrote a diary about the Thirty Years War.
