Christ Church

The Christ Church is an Art Nouveau Protestant church in Velbert in the Mitte district.

architecture

The church building has a 49 meter high six-storey tower with a multi-curved dome integrated into the side of the building. In its hall without supporting pillars, it holds over 900 people (without organ loft). At the top of the gable is a figure of Christ created by the Cologne sculptor Georg Grasegger . Three bells were installed, which together weigh 12.3 t. Due to the special construction of the church, the pulpit, the organ and the altar can be seen from all places. The glass windows were donated by Velbert citizens, whose names they bear.

history

The architects of the building were Franz Brantzky and Karl Krieger, who laid the foundation stone for the Art Nouveau building on November 1st, 1908, as a large new building was necessary due to the city's strong population growth at the end of the 19th century. The laying of the foundation stone was watched by 3,000 people. In 1910 the construction work was completed. The organ from 1909 comes from the Furtwängler and Hammer Organ Institute in Hanover. It was restored in 2005.
