The Chronica Naierensis or Crónica najerense (original title Crónica leonesa ) is a universal historical chronicle from the 12th century that was written in the Benedictine monastery of Santa María la Real in Nájera ( Spain ). It is written in Latin and tells the world events, beginning with the biblical creation up to the 12th century AD. The focus is on the stories of the Bible , the Visigoths in Spain and the kingdoms of Castile and León . The Chronica was an important model for later Spanish historians, especially for De rebus Hispaniae des Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada , the Chronicon mundi of Lucas de Tuy , and the Estoria de España, which was written under the patronage of Alfonso X of Castile .

In addition to the classical and biblical authorities, the Chronica Naierensis refers to a large extent to the Cantares de gesta (Spanish heroic epic). The Chronica is not an original work, but a compilation of various works. The history of the Visigoths comes largely from Isidore of Seville and more recent Spanish history includes the Corpus Pelagianum , a work written under the supervision of Pelagius , the bishop of Oviedo . The Chronica was completed towards the end of the 12th century.
