Circesium ( Greek Κιρκήσιον ) was a Roman fortification and settlement in Mesopotamia . The place is now 40 km southeast of Deir ez-Zor in Syria , at the confluence of the Chabur and Euphrates .
The fortress was on an island at the confluence of the two rivers. Under Diocletian , the outer works of the complex were expanded. Until the 5th century Circesium was the seat of the prefect of the Legio IIII Parthica .
In the course of the renewal of the border fortifications under Justinian I , the fortress works were renewed and repaired, some of which had been washed under by the Euphrates.
Circesium was also a bishopric, to which the titular bishopric of Circesium goes back.
